SR22 Texas Insurance - Reinstate Drivers License

In order to reinstate your driver's license in the state of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires that you have SR22 Texas Insurance. The SR in SR22 stands for Safety Responsibility. SR22 Texas Insurance is required for high risk drivers, and in most case it must be kept on file for 2 years from the conviction date. A reinstatement fee of $100 must also be paid. Some reasons drivers may need SR22 Texas Insurance may include: involvement in a motor vehicle accident without proof of insurance, Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Driving While Impaired (DWI), drug offenses, Driving While License is Invalid (DWLI), habitual violations, Violation of Drivers License Restriction (VDLR). The state of Texas will suspend a drivers license if a person has had 4 traffic violations within a 12 month period, or 7 traffic violations with a 24 month period.

SR22 Texas Insurance must include at least the minimum liability insurance limits for the state which are $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Once the policy is activated by the insurance carrier, the insurance company will notify the Texas Department of Public Safety that the driver meets the legal auto insurance requirements. A lapse in coverage will result in the auto insurance company notifying the state with an SR26 Filing, which will result in another drivers license suspension. If that happens additional fees, and another SR22 Filing must be activated. That is why once an SR22 Texas Insurance policy has been purchased, it is important for the driver to pay the premium on time to prevent the policy from being terminated.

The Texas Department of Safety is located in Austin. An SR22 Texas Insurance form can be mailed or faxed to their office. It can also be brought in and submitted in person to the following 4 locations around the state: in Austin at 108 Denson Drive in Houston; 12220 South Gessner Drive in Garland; 350 West 1H 30; or in Universal City at 1633 Pat Booker Road.

Because rates vary greatly amongst carriers, it is very important to shop around thoroughly for SR22 Insurance. Rates in the metropolitan areas of Texas are higher than rates in the rural areas. Expect to pay more if you live in Houston, San Antonio or Dallas as opposed to if you live in Waco or Tyler. Getting SR22 Texas Insurance and reinstating your driver's license will get you legally back on the road.

What You Need to Know About Car Insurance in Texas

Buying car insurance is never a fun ordeal, but with knowing what you need before hand, it can make it that much easier. Each state has their own laws concerning minimum car insurance, so always make sure you are getting enough coverage when you move to another state. Never assume that the coverage you have is good enough to meet another state's insurance requirements.

In the state of Texas, the car insurance requirement is a minimum of 30/60/25. Don't know what this means? Don't worry, I'll explain. Coverage is usually displayed this way to show the basic coverage amounts relatively quickly instead of trying to look in different parts of the policy. The first number, 30, means that you have $30,000 in coverage to pay for medical expenses for each person injured in an accident. The 60 means the maximum the insurance will pay out is a total of $60,000 for all injured in an accident. Lastly, the 25 stands for $25,000 in coverage to pay for damage and repairs to vehicles involved in the accident.

Please take note that these coverage's should only take place if you are found at fault for an accident. If you are not at fault, it is the other driver's insurance you should be concerned about.

Texas car insurance laws are very strict when it comes to minimum insurance requirements. Up to 20% of drivers in Texas may be driving with no insurance at any time. Because of the large amount of drivers that have no insurance, Texas had to take a hard stance against those who do not have the minimum car insurance. With different state agencies working together, they have created TexasSure. This enables law enforcement to check and see if the insurance card given is up to date and valid.

When caught driving without insurance, the first penalty can be a fine between $175 and $350. For those whom still do not think it is necessary to carry insurance, and get caught again, the penalty is much steeper the second time. With a second offense, you can expect a fine up to $1,000, have your vehicle impounded for up to 180 days, and have your license suspended.

The cost of not having insurance can be much greater, though. If you are at fault when involved in an accident, you can personally be held responsible for all monetary damages. This means that you could be held responsible for the damage to the other's car as well as their hospital bills if injured. If you do not have the money on hand to pay for everything, then you can be sued and have your wages garnished until the debt is paid in full.

It is wise to see what requirements there are when arriving in a new state when it comes to car insurance, and Texas is no different. Just make sure to talk to your insurance agent/broker when you move and make sure your policy has at least the minimum coverage to avoid any trouble.
