The Benefits of Having Multiple Cars

Car ownership in families is steadily increasing from single to multiple car ownership. According to statistics, multiple car ownership is on the increase and by 2035 it is projected that 32% of households in Great Britain will have more than one car but, what are the reasons behind this and do they stack up, let’s take a look?

Cheaper car insurance

It may at first appear that having multiple cars incurs more costs on car insurance. However, if you insure all your cars at once, you could end up paying less for car insurance. A multi-car insurance policy is an insurance plan that covers two cars in one single policy. Multiple car insurance is cheaper both financially and with regard to time. For example, instead of having two insurance renewal dates, you have just one, making management easy for busy families. The same is true when you need to speak to your policy providers, for example to update them on a change of address. One single call is enough as all your vehicles are covered by the same policy.

Convenience
For a large family, having multiple cars is great for convenience and flexibility. If there is ever an emergency, such as a trip to the doctor or a birthday party at the other side of town, having two cars is a great way to ensure no one will be left stuck at home. These days, many parents are doing more than one job to keep the family financially stable. In these cases, having only one car can be disadvantageous if one parents works longer hours and the children need to be picked from school.

Specific car for specific occasion
This is a major advantage for big families that love outdoor activities. A saloon car can be used by anyone to go to work, food shopping, visiting friends or taking long trips. However, this is not the best car for camping or hiking. Therefore, owning a large SUV is good for families who often go on road trips where terrain can be tricky and renting a vehicle may be expensive and inconvenient.

A car for teenagers
Not every parent is comfortable letting his or her teenagers learn how to drive using the primary car. It is wise to buy an easy to maintain and a cheaper car which the teenagers can use to learn how to drive. This way, in case your teenage does have a driving accident, you will still have a vehicle to get to work each day.

So, as we can see there are definitely some obvious benefits as to having more than one car in a family and the reasons we have outlined above, along with numerous others, are all probably fueling the growing number of multi car families.
